Forest and Outdoor Learning Awards levels 6-8
Forest and Outdoor Learning Leadership Awards (FOLAs) at SCQF Levels 6 and 8 are designed for individuals who want to develop the knowledge and skills to lead forest and outdoor learning sessions with confidence and competence.
Rooted in the ethos of Forest School, these awards blend practical outdoor skills with leadership principles and learning theory. Participants gain the ability to create safe, engaging, and sustainable outdoor learning experiences for a wide range of groups and settings.
Forest College gave me a greater appreciation for the outdoors and how much skill it takes to manage and look after it.
Level 6: Assistant Forest School and Outdoor Learning Leader
- Prepares learners to support and assist in delivering forest school and outdoor learning sessions
- Combines practical skills with an introduction to leadership principles and learning approaches

Level 8: Forest School and Outdoor Learning Leader
- Recognised by the Forest School Association as equivalent to the Forest School Leader Practitioner Award (Level 3), enabling individuals to lead forest school programmes independently
- Extends beyond traditional forest school practiceto equip leaders to deliver a broad range of outdoor learning in varied environments
Level 8: Forest School and Outdoor Learning Leader
- Covers advanced practical skills, learning theory, woodland management, and legal compliance
- Includes the planning and delivery of forest school sessions as part of the qualification
- Requires completion of a learning journal, written assignments, and practical assessments
