Welcome to Newbattle Abbey College
Newbattle Abbey College offers adults of all ages the opportunity to enjoy a high quality learning experience within an historic heritage site. We are a residential college and our motto is ‘Sero Sed Serio’ (Late but in Earnest). This describes our students, most of whom are over 18 years of age, who are returning to education after varied life experiences. We also work with young people at points of transition in school or in the community.
RODDY HENRY, PRINCIPAL
Newbattle Abbey College has a proven track record of meeting the needs of adults and young people at points of transition. Through transformative and inclusive learning programmes, coupled with extensive support, the College helps people change their lives and achieve their personal ambitions.
The College is unique in the college sector in Scotland in terms of its origins and environment. Established in 1937 when the beautiful estate in which the College is situated was left in trust by the 11th Marquis of Lothian, the College stays true to its founding principles while responding to the needs of today.
The College is governed by its Board of Directors and receives funding from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) as a specialist institution. However, core funding from the SFC currently amounts to around half of our total annual expenditure. The balance of our income is generated through partnerships, commercial activities and donations, the income from which is invested back into our curriculum and infrastructure to support our purpose.
We also secure grant funding from various sources to support a range of access programmes and provision in response to identified need, often in partnership with community or voluntary organisations.

Read our Strategic Plan 2023 - 2026
We have published our new Strategic Plan, setting out our purpose, vision and aims for the next few years and the values that underpin our work. The Plan was developed in consultation with our stakeholders, including our students and staff, and approved by the Board of Directors.
Created in a period of unprecedented challenge and continued uncertainty, the Plan focuses on the unique and vital role the college plays, changing lives and unlocking opportunity. It celebrates the nurturing community of learners and staff that make the college special, the curriculum that we create for and with our learners, our history and the range of activities and experiences that we provide to help sustain our work and our historic estate.
The direction, aims and objectives we have set will help ensure that the college continues to thrive as a model of sustainability and worth.
